Antioxidants

Antioxidants is the largest group of supplements for anti-aging oral supplementation and the most concentrated component in anti-aging super foods. The function of the antioxidants is to neutralize free radical molecules, the type of chemical can accelerate aging process if in excess. Most antioxidants are either fat or water soluble, but not both except Alpha Lipoic Acid.  The Antioxidants comprise of the following type of molecules: 1) Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), 2) Bioflavaoids , 3) some vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin C, E, A, 4) Other antioxidant nutrients include selenium, lycopene, and lutein. The main food source of antioxidants is fruits, vegetables and other plant products.

Alpha lipoic acid is not only an antioxidant in its own right, but it has the capacity to recycle these other antioxidants. Alpha lipoic acid is also an anti inflammatory agent. Alpha lipoic acid also prevents the cross linking of fibers, which leads to aging and the development of wrinkles. Alpha lipoic acid is produced by the body, but only in small amounts. It is used by the cells in their production of cellular energy, and we only benefit from its antioxidant effects if the amount of ALA in our bodies is greater than that our cells need for normal functioning. The levels of ALA in our body decline as we age. Alpha Lipoic Acid is both fat and water soluble that makes it work in all part of the body.

Bioflavanoids are water soluble antioxidant that can also help keep blood vessels healthy and strong, and have an anti-inflammatory effect. This anti-inflammatory effect is quite important in preventing the effects of aging. The benefits of bioflavanoid anti-aging supplements are not limited to the visible signs of aging, like wrinkles, poor skin tone, sagging skin, and pigmentation. It also helps protect us from age-related disease.

Multivitamins

Antioxidants vitamin -- Vitamin A, C, E

Vitamin C is a well-known antioxidant vitamin anti-aging supplement. An effective plan to take vitamin C is a nutrition plan that includes healthy portions of fruits and vegetables. A diet rich in vitamin C, along with minimizing intake of food loaded with fat, will be effective in reducing the effects of aging. Vitamin C is water soluble.

Vitamin E is also an antioxidant supplement. Vitamin E protects certain cell membranes within the body and the skin that are attacked by free radicals. The fatty cell membranes fight against being mutated by free radicals for DNA degeneration which is another cause for aging. Many natural foods, mainly fruits and vegetables, contain significant amount of Vitamin E.

Vitamin A is an important skin nutrient and an antioxidant as well. Vitamin A is needed for the normal growth and renewal of skin cells. It nourishes the fat layer underneath the skin and keeps skin suppled. Symptoms of vitamin A deficiency include dry and rough skin, localized breakouts, fragile skin, wrinkle prone skin, poor skin texture, and splitting nails. One thing to remember with taking vitamin A supplements is not to exceed the recommended daily dose, as it can build up in your body if taken in excess. Taking 10000 IU per day is fine. Vitamin A is fat soluble.

Vitamin B complex (folic acid, B6, B12)

Vitamin B6, B12 can regulate and balance the methylation process, one of the 6 main causes of aging. if the level of methylation is out of control. Inadequate levels of folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12 can lead to increased homocysteine levels. Homocysteine is a byproduct of the important methylation process in our body after methionion (an amino acid) is used to methylate protein and DNA. Excess homocysteine has been implicated in aging. In additioin, excess homocysteine level is an independent marker of risk for the development of cardiovascular disease, an cardiovascular risk factor as important as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) considered by some researcher. Homocysteine can make blood clot more easily than normal, increasing the risk of both heart attack and death by heart attack.

Minerals

The importance of minerals in anti-aging diet is not as well-known as multivitamins. However, it has been suggested by health experts that 'The foremost nutritional defects in the aged and aging are calcium, iron and protein". (from the final report of the New York State Joint Legislative Committee on Nutrition for 1947 article, the noted authority on diseases of older persons). A report made in 2007 from the National Academy of Sciences emphasizes that the minerals potassium, phosphorus and magnesium are essential in the diet for proper use of all body-building protein foods. Minerals are closely linked to protein's tasks of repairing and  replacing body cells. The multiple-mineral concentrate is the best way to use a mineral supplement to the diet.

Hyaluronic Acid

"Hyaluronic Acid is natural substance found in the connective tissues of your body. The benefits of Hyaluric Acid are that it acts as a lubricant, and is extremely necessary in the proper functioning of joint movement, heart valves, and even our eyes.

Another very important benefit, or function, is that it helps maintain the very shape of our skin. If you are a recipient of healthy skin, more than likely, you have a large amount of Hyaluronic Acid in your body. Of course, the opposite side of this is that, a reduced amount of this acid is associated with the appearance of wrinkles.

There was an interesting study associated with HA in a village in Japan. It was featured on the ABC news magazine 20/20. The residents in this particular Japanese village tended to live much longer than average. Ten percent of the villagers are 85 years of age or older.

It was found, that the village people ingested large quantities of starchy root vegetables like sweet potatoes. Studies have found these vegetables are high in Hyaluronic Acid, which in turn may have contributed highly to their youthfulness.

Our skin has three layers which need to be efficiently connected to each other. HA helps to maintain healthy collagen and to keep the skin moisturized and avoid wrinkles. It stands to reason then, that HA is a key ingredient used in many of the best anti-aging skin care creams and products.

HA retains water much like a sponge. It absorbs an astonishing thousand times its weight. It hydrates your skin and increases its volume and density. It transports the essential nutrients to your skin's viable cells. It also provides the volume necessary in your skin's overall appearance.

The benefits of Hyaluronic Acid are many, with no known side effects that you need to be concerned about in HA products, except there have been reports of some side effects associated with knee and facial injections. HA is not only beneficial in lubricating our joints, heart valves and eyes, it is essential to having wrinkle-free skin.

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 facilitates and regulates the oxidation of fats and sugars into energy in cell's mitochondrial where 95% of cellular energy is produced. Aging humans have been found to have over 50% less CoQ10 on average compared to that of young adults.  A deficiency of CoQ10 has been found to be linked to age-related mitochondrial disorders. These findings make CoQ10 one of the most important anti-aging supplement for people over 30.

Essential Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) can help reduce deaths from heart disease. The FDA states that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may actually reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) may have the triglyceride-lowering effects on reducing heart and blood vessel disorders and can protect healthy blood flow in arteries.

DHEA

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is an adrenal hormone that is the precursor for steroid hormones such as testosterone and estrogen. Production peaks in the mid-20s, and gradually declines with age. DHEA declines precipitously with advancing age in both men and women. In 1981, the Life Extension Foundation introduced DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) to its members through an article that described the multiple benefits that this hormone might produce. However, the general public did not learn about DHEA supplements until 1996, when the benefits of DHEA were touted by the news media and in several popular books. DHEA became credible to the medical establishment when the New York Academy of Sciences published a book entitled DHEA and Aging. This book provided scientific validation for the many life extending effects of DHEA although DHEA supplements, even when taken briefly, may cause liver damage and have other detrimental effects on the body as its side effects.

Carnosine

Carnosine, a multifunctional dipeptide made up of amino acids beta-alanine and L-histidine that exists both in food and in human body. Carnosine occurs in very low concentrations in the brain and other tissues. It is a unique dipeptide that interferes with the glycation process, one of the 6 main causes of aging., preventing cross-linking of proteins.

Long-lived cells such as nerve cells (neurons) and muscle cells (myocytes) contain high levels of carnosine. Carnosine levels decline with age. Muscle levels decline 63% from age 10 to age 70, which may account for the age-related decline in muscle mass and function. The Carnosine also acts as a pH buffer to protect muscle cell membranes from oxidation under the acidic conditions of muscular exertion. Carnosine enables the heart muscle to contract more efficiently through enhancement of calcium response in heart myocytes.

In the laboratory, carnosine has been shown to delay the senescence or aging of human cells called fibroblasts.

Human Growth Hormone

Human growth hormone produced by pituitary gland is a type of protein hormone responsible for the overall growth,  metabolism and development of the body. Over the counter HGG does not contain prescription HGH, instead they are natural HGH supplements that is a mixture of all natural growth hormones and mimic the roles of a naturally produced HGH by the body.

Amino Acids

In aging, there is not only a decrease of growth hormone, but there is also an increase in the production of somatostatin, a blocker to growth hormone. In order to block somatostatin, amino acid arginine (Arg) can be added  which can take away the blocker and allows the production of your own growth hormone to be more effective.
